Reviews for B&H Dairy
Review highlights
Based on 861 reviewsB&H Dairy is widely appreciated for its authentic Eastern European kosher dairy cuisine, consistently praised for hearty, flavorful dishes such as borscht, matzo ball soup, pierogis, and stuffed cabbage. Customers frequently highlight the restaurant's long-standing tradition and reliability, with many returning patrons noting its decades-long consistency in food quality. The establishment’s vintage lunch counter atmosphere is described as cozy but very cramped, with limited space that can feel congested, yet this does not detract from the overall positive dining experience. Service is generally considered friendly and efficient, complementing the warm, nostalgic ambiance. Overall, B&H Dairy is recognized as a beloved neighborhood spot delivering satisfying comfort food with a notable emphasis on maintaining its traditional charm and culinary authenticity.
This place is top notch. I have walked past this place for 25+ years and have always been curious about the food. Finally made it here because of a craving for borscht. I'm so glad I did. The place was packed on an early Saturday afternoon. The space is tiny. Ordered the borscht, lentil soup, veggie burger, potato pancakes with sour cream and apple sauce. Everything was delicious. Let me tell you, you won't leave hungry for sure. And!!!! the service was super quick and very friendly!!! They really make you feel welcomed here. I can't wait to go back and try more stuff.
B & H Dairy opened in 1938 and has been serving consistently delicious Eastern European comfort food ever since. It’s a vintage style, dairy kosher vegetarian lunch counter that’s open late. This place has been a favorite of mine for the last 17 years. I love the mushroom and sauerkraut pierogis. They are stuffed so full of well-seasoned sauerkraut and mushroom, you won’t believe they stayed together, but they always do. Pierogis come fried or boiled and with cheese, potato, or spinach and feta. They are served with sour cream or grilled onions - pay the extra $1.50 and get them both. The borscht (usually served hot or cold) is perfectly balanced - sweet, sour, earthy. All the soup is great, really. The challah has crispy edges and is fluffy in the center - slightly sweet, rich and just the right amount of salt, best served warm with butter. If you take it home, make sure to warm it up in the oven. The stuffed cabbage is Eastern European comfort food at its best. The filling has a deep flavor, topped with tomato sauce that is both slightly bitter and sweet. Finish your meal with a blintze - my favorite is cherry. I recommend eating in because the environment is fun, relaxed, and everything is better hot off the grille. They have a few tables outside, as well. The place is small, so if there’s not a seat, take out is still amazing - see photos. They always have daily specials and a fresh juice bar. While it’s listed as a vegetarian place, you will find fish on the menu that is clearly labeled.
delicious matzo ball soup but i have never been in a more cramped restaurant. your knees will hurt leaving this place. swear to god it is CRAMPED
-The narrowest restaurant in the world but who cares?- Hearty food. Fresh and delicious stuffed cabbage. Soups here are soooo good, especially Mushroom Barley which served with delight side bread. Been coming here for the past 25 years and its consistency is always there.
hole in the wall spot. Very cozy and congested for sure. The food and service was great. got breakfast for dinner and it didn’t disappoint. bang for your buck.
Perfect, cozy, traditional NY Deli food except better because it’s vegetarian! Excluding fish, which is pretty much my NY family’s definition of vegetarian too. Almost immediate service and later hours then you’d expect make this the perfect place to go if you don’t want cook but don’t want to make an ordeal of eating out. You get to play it like it’s 1950 at a very traditional NY deli counter and get all the Eastern European comfort foods like knishes, borscht, pierogi, fresh-baked challah, and blintzes. Also all the old favorite drinks like egg cream. Always satisfying and always tastes fresh and comforting.
small, classic NY diner. an unassuming store front but a real gem inside. the matzo ball soup and knishes and gravy were hot and hearty, with a reasonable price given you’re in NYC. efficient staff.
This was maybe the best meal I had in New York. I loved the communal aspect of the restaurant; you can really tell it’s a beloved, historic place. The server was super cool and recommended the “Tieso” (a customer-created custom dish-lovely concept) and the lentil soup, both outstanding. The bread (challah?) is unbelievably good. Sad that the “Challah por favor” black cap was sold out would have bought it if available. Next time
